I have an embarrassing problem. If I don't take Clomipramine, which causes constipation, I get diarrhea (sp?) every day because of general anxiety. Risperdal is slightly constipating but not enough. I don't think the Clomip. belongs because I'm bipolar. But my digestive system has been the best it's ever been because of it.

Does anybody have any ideas? I'm wondering if Topamax is added as a mood stabilizer, if it would cause constipation and Clomp. could be discontinued. But then the problem is sleep and something would have to be added for that. This is too complicated.

I don't want to get addicted to Imodium or anything like that. Any ideas?

Don't be embarrased.  I have had the same problem.  I think it's just part of the GAD package.  Effexor has gotten rid of my gastrointestinal anxiety problems though.

I'm hoping to give Dopamax a shot myself.  It causes insomnia?  I guess I missed that symptom.  How soon are you going on it?  I'd stick with the Imodium I guess until then or eat alot of constipating foods and more fibre. Cheese is a good constipator.  If you are a carnivore (I'm not), red meat is the most constipating.

Is Imodium actually addicting?

i have "mixed" IBS (constipation and diareah) which is stress induced.

the whole key is to get yourself "regular" heh.

fiber will help with both issues.  there are fiber capsules if you aren't into the benifiber powder.  also make sure you're properly hydrated.

for constipatation, the best thing i have found is to take 400mg of magnesium at bed time.  (most magnesium in the store is magnesium oxide, which is useless as your body really can't absorb it.  also avoid magnesium chlorate and carbonate.  the best magnesium is magnesium malate.  other absorbable forms are magnesium citrate, tauranate, gylcinate and succinate. i take a mix of the absorbable forms just for the hell of it made by source naturals. but any good vitamin store will have a magnesium supplement in malate or one of the other _ate forms.) but ease up on your dose slowly so you don't get diareah.

i swear by this magnesium stuff (after years of gastroenterologist trips etc, it's been the one thing other than fiber to make a huge difference.)

another thing is if your diareah is stress induced, sometimes an anti spasmodic can help.

don't know if that helped.

My post was confusing. I meant, I have insomnia, and if I go off of Clomipramine, which is sedating, then I won't get to sleep. I don't know if I will go on Topamax, but I think a real mood stabilizer will need to be added. But then another drug needs to be taken away because he doesn't want me on six or seven drugs. As far as side effects/benefits go, Topamax sounds best. But then I won't be taking it mainly for the side effects. So whatever my doctor thinks is best for the main symptoms. He's always welcomes my ideas so I want to just have some info for possibilities.

I'm considering Dopamax for the same reasons, the side effect profile seems least frightening to me.  I am hoping I can keep my bedtime seroquel though.  I can't even handle the thought of going back to no sleep.  I want to keep the effex as well if I can.  That is what got rid of my GAD related IBS symptoms.  Maybe Topamax will help too though, hopefully for you.

Lets compare notes if we both try the Dopamax.  I'm pretty nervous about it.

Meanwhile, eat a block o cheddar!

You know what's worse than posting when hypomanic? Reading your own posts that you posted when hypomanic while you're hypomanic.

Anyway, my next scheduled app't isn't until April 19 but I'm on a waiting list to get in sooner. For now I am going to go to 1 mg Risperdal. That's scary enough for now.  Who knows maybe it will be more constipating.

We'll definitely have to compare notes. Thanks for other responses too.

If you follow the bratty diet, recommended for when you have a stomach bug, it should help you.  Bananas, rice, applesauce, tea, toast, yogurt.  I would increase yogurt and bananas especially.  I see one of the yogurt mfgr's is marketing a new yogurt with extra cultures to combat stress related stomach trouble....  Apples contain quite a bit of pectin (see AM's crossed out kaeopectate post ;) ).  Stick to fresh, raw fruits and vegetables as much as you can.  Good luck to you...

Actually my friend who has IBS, not anxiety induced eats a very careful diet designed for IBS patients.  And as mentioned above, lots of rice is included.

I bet you could find that diet online, foods to avoid, etc.
