So from what I've heard from every pdoc that I've ever had is that focalin is more mild, possibly intentionally so. I tried it once to replace adderall (due to some interaction) and we were up to doses so high that the pharmacy wouldn't fill them. I felt nothing. A pdoc said that he prefers it for parents who are med sensitive or need a gentler approach. Now that might not be the official position, but it's what I've always heard. Clearly though, some people react better to amphetamine and some better to methylphenadates so it's impossible to predict that transition except through a trial to see what works best, because there is also a chance that your more sensitive to the methylphenadates, in which case everything I wrote might be totally wrong
