Can a Person with Seizure Disorder Take Antipsychotics?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Can a person take Antipsychotics if they have a seizure disorder? I ask because before I took Latuda my doctor asked me if I had a seizure disorder.

Thank you in advance.

They can lower your seizure threshold. You might be ok, or just need a tweak of anti convulsant

I don’t have a seizure disorder. I was just wondering.

There is no hard a fast rule. First of all, except for benzos and anticonvulsants almost everything else used in psychiatry increases the risk of seizure. So what is a person to do if they need psycomeds but they have a seizure disorder ? I have managed to stay on wellbutrin, amphetamine, and abilify despite my temporal lobe epilepsy. My pdoc and neurologist worked together and once we found the right anticonvulsive the seizures stopped. Keppra is dosed in grams, 1, 2, and 3 grams and 2 grams a day has totally stopped seizures for several years. Fortunately most of the seizure causing psycomeds have very low incidences, like .1% (1 in 1000) of this side effect.

I think it is safer to say some people with seizure disorders may be able to keep their other seizure causing meds. Some may not.
