in 2015 (I think) I asked my pdoc for Topamax to help with weight loss and to help my mood. He agreed to have me try it. I don't remember what dose I was on but I didn't find it helpful for either one. I think @Wonderful.Cheese is on Topamax, maybe she is having a better result with it than I did.

Just started Topamax for a few reasons:

  • Weight loss
  • Addressing of migraines
  • Elevation of mood
  • Reduction of seizures

Will report back when I have further information. At the moment I'm on the minimum dose (25mg) but can go much higher (up to and including 300mg).

I'm  not sure where do put this.

Has anybody been prescribed topamax specifically to lose weight due to medication.

If so did it work, were there any side effects and what dose helped?

I had no luck with anything on it. 😕

Thank you so much for all your replies. I guess topamax isn't the way to go for weight loss and I just have to slog it out the hard way. I don't think that my pdoc would be up for it anyway

It could be a good weight loss medicine for you. Everyone is unique in their response to the medicine.

Another medicine that might be good for weight loss is Zonegran (zonisamide). I personally didn't have much weight gain (more than Topamax though) to speak of, but it was a great mood stabilizer for me aside from the weight loss. It helped me with cognitive dysfunction I was having with lamotrigine (and then I started going down on the lamotrigine until I was off of it anyway).

Sorry @rowan77! I do take topamax. I have lost weight but I got off of seroquel XR 800 mg and switched to 20 mg zyprexa zydis and remain on Abilify 30 mg and lamictal and klonopin too (I think that’s all for psych meds).

My pdoc recently wanted to add a small dose of seroquel back in addition to the zyprexa and Abilify but I flat out refused. I know seroquel is an excellent anti manic though. It’s better than zyprexa IME. I’ve been rage-y and manic-y since the switch but I’ve lost weight. Like 25-30 lbs. roughly. I don’t know what the right answer is.

But I do know that topamax helps curb the binge eating episodes for me. And I am losing weight so why stop it is my theory I guess. No side effects for me and I take 100 mg two times a day. I did have some hand tingling at first but that quickly went away.

Ooooh I forgot about that! I had that too when I was on 400 mg/day.

Yeah my husband is also on it for weight loss. He had it too but it also went away quickly. Did it ever go away for you? @mikl_pls

I also should mention that I no longer sleep eat, i.e. I don’t wake up in the middle of the night and eat a bunch of crap and head back to bed. This happened to me nightly on seroquel and I was on it for 11+ years. Once I switched to zyprexa zydis the night eating stopped. Even if I wake up to use the bathroom, I just don’t have that urge to overeat in the middle of the night anymore. This could also be helping me lose weight.

I also take nuvigil for my sleep disorders which also probably helps appetite until it wears off during the day.

But still. I can tell a difference when I miss or take the topamax late. Then it’s like I get the munchies and tend to eat too much. So it does help, but just wanted to let you know that there are other factors in play here in my case! @rowan77

No, not after I got up to 400 mg. I tapered off of it after a while anyway though lol.

Nuvigil made me lose 15 lb without even trying.
