Please Help. I'm taking a combo of Prozac/Risperdal/Seroquel XR

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have lurked here for many years and just decided to jump into the fray. I am like the title of this thread says, on two antipsychotics and an antidepressant. It's a long story of how i got to this combo so I won't bore anyone with the details.

I'm just wondering if I'm on too much meds. Here is my script:

Seroquel XR 300mg

Risperdal 4mg

Prozac 20mg

I've never come across anyone on the internet on my combo of meds so I'm wondering if this is actually an ok cocktail? My doctor isn't the most knowlegeable so not sure what to make of it.

I take all 3 before going to sleep. Thank you for any and all responses!

3 medications is not a lot, although knowing your diagnosis would be helpful, as mentioned by @basuraeuropea above....Would you feel comfortable sharing your diagnosis?

I have to take 2 antipsychotics too....as long as the combo is working and you aren't suffering from severe side effects you shouldn't worry

Finding someone with the exact combo is actually quite rare, so just cuz you can’t find meds that match up exactly isnt a huge concern on its own

Well my initial diagnosis was schitzophrenia but then they added bi polar depression and high anxiety/ocd.  It's a mixed combo.

Thank you for the responses so far. I am terribly tired ALL the time from this combo. Most people complain prozac gives them energy but it's the complete opposite for me. I used to take my prozac when I would wake up but now am starting to take it when I go to sleep. It doesn't matter when I take it, I'm tired all the time, plus add the sedating effects of seroquel and risperdal and I'm a zombie monster.

The weight gain has been terrible too but that's a discussion for another day. Thank you all for your responses.

I agree......20 mg is pretty low......Maybe you could ask pdoc about an increase?

isn't zoloft more activating than prozac amongst the ssris?

From my experience in trying both of them (Prozac and Zoloft), I found Prozac to be much more stimulating....Everyone is different, though.

That's why I had to stop Prozac--it was affecting my sleep.

that's interesting. i've always read that zoloft is the most activating of the ssris due to the mild inhibition of dopamine reuptake. i've never been on prozac, but i have been on zoloft and i absolutely could not take the stimulation.

If sedation is an issue, could you swap out one of your aaps with something like abilify?

otherwise how about bupropion to augment or replace the prozac? It also helps with weight loss.

My doctor has talked about switching to Abilify but I don't know what's making me so fat, if it's the Risperdal or Seroquel XR. The prozac helps stabilize my mood and gives my anxiety a balance so I really don't want to switch it out if at all possible. It took me months to adjust to the prozac.

I was actually thinking of reducing my Risperdal from 4mg to 2mg by splitting the pills in half with my pill cutter. I was hoping by doing this that I would sleep less and would lose some weight. Maybe reducing the risperdal by half will help me overall. I will talk to my doctor eventually about this and I know everyone says not to do anything without doctor's permission but I feel like it wouldn't be the worst idea. I don't know what kind of symptoms I will have by splitting my risperdal in half. I really don't deal with withdrawal symptoms well.
