I've got a cold. headache. sore throat. can't taste anything. cough. slight temperature. sore glands. aches.

If I wasn't on efexor I'd get some cold-cough medication...but....efexor says you can't take cough meds and suchlike. *sigh*

Any ideas?

For most people, dextromethorphan-based cough syrups are safe if taken

cautiously - it may be as strong an SSRI as the Effexor you are taking.

The higher the FX dose you take, the more likely that the combination

could become too much (Call your pharmacist/chemist and ask how

bad the risk would be on your medication schedule)

5-10 percent of caucasians do not metabolize it quickly to begin with - and

several ADs (especially Zyban/Wellbutrin/bupropion, but apparently not

venlafaxine/Effexor) make it very hard to metabolize it and very easy to

overdose on it.

Guaifenesin without the dextromethorphan may not make the cough go

away, but is supposed to break things up so the coughing has a purpose.

It also doesn't interact with as many things.

BTW, Advil is ibuprofen. Good for pain sometimes but won't break a fever -

that takes aspirin or acetaminophen.

Other remedies: gargling warm salt water to clear your throat; taking

small amounts at a time of honey+lemon juice syrup to coat the throat;

menthol/eucalyptus cough drops are good for cough and clearing some

congestion (really good for teething irritation from wisdom teeth)

Gee...I was Effexor for years. Took cold and cough products when I needed them, without any SEs.

Guess I didn't read the PI very well. On the other hand, this was back in the day when I was in one the 1st open trials of Effexor...maybe they didn't know. And after that, by the time it went to market, I'd been on it for a couple years. So I didn't read the PI, I guess?

Pseudoephedrine has a seretonin effect.  I couldn't take the stuff before Effexor.  It gave me heart palpitations and anxiety.

The pharmacist told me it was a no no when I filled my first script.

thanks for all the info.

its eased off a bit for the moment...(but I always get things like that worse in the mornings...) so will see how it goes....if its not improved by Friday morning when I see my GP anyway, I can ask her what's best to take.

in the meantime, if anyone knows any UK brand names of stuff that's safe to take I'd be grateful, then I can nip up to the chemist during lunch at work and pick up something.Thanks.

there's this herbal thing I used to take at uni, called Vegetable Cough Remover, it was *POTENT* (tasted extremely nasty! I don't think its available any more now...shame!)
