Ritalin vs Modafinil

I wonder if anyone has taken both and what they thought. I find Ritalin to be slightly more effective.

To be fair, I have never tried either one.......I do know Ritalin is considered a stimulant drug.

Modafinil (Provigil) is not technically in the stimulant class--It is considered a "wakefulness-promoting" drug........So they are slightly different.

What symptoms are you trying to treat?

It's actually complex. I insisted to my pdoc that I have cognitive issues becoz of clozapine but he doesn't believe it. He says the effects are less than with olanzapine. I am trying to treat bad working memory and short term memory and task based focus as well as overall cognition. My pdoc believes that the cognitive impairment I am experiencing or may be experiencing could be due to the sedating effects of clozapine. I am trying to treat cognitive problems.

Ritalin is actually a good choice for cognitive enhancement.....Modafinil has also been tried for it's cognitive effects, but if Ritalin is working better for you, I'd say stick with that.

The only issue you might have with Ritalin, is that it tends to build tolerance if it's taken every day, or most days....Some docs might recommend taking "drug holidays" from Ritalin, to prevent or slow tolerance.

For example, my son took Ritalin as a child for ADD----However, he only took it on school days--he didn't take it on weekends or in the summer......His doc at the time actually recommended this to us.

  • 1 month later...

I've taken both extensively (as well as Concerta, Nuvigil etc.) and my 2d is:

Provigil

- I got amazing effects off of Provigil initially. I was working tirelessly and enjoying it, instead of dreading it and dying for it to be over. It was fabulous. I thought I'd found my med.
- But then it basically completely pooped-out. Taking breaks from it (from weeks to years) never recaptured that initial phase.
- Now when I take it, I get very mild mood elevation and increased focus. I usually only take it when I really can't motivate and sometimes it helps a bit. That's it.

Ritalin

- When I first started on it I was crazy for music all of a sudden. For a few days I watched YouTube music videos all day, it was amazing!
- After that though the effects levelled-off but I was still getting a good boost in mood, energy and focus for 5-7 hours.
- After a couple of months that started declining to where I've been for 2+ years now: I get about 1.5 hours of lifted mood and energy. It's not much but it's worth the World to me. I should add that it lifts my mood (out of the gutter of worthlessness) but doesn't relieve my anhedonia much. I feel "OK" but can't think of a single thing I want to do -_-
- There's good data that says that its effectiveness doesn't decrease for ADD but does for depression and this tallies with my personal experience.

HTH and always remember that YMMV.

I have taken both. Modafinil made me psychotic and Ritalin made me psychotic. When it wasn’t making me psychotic, Ritalin worked well for my add though. Modafinil was given to me during a particularly apathetic depression to try and get me up and doing things but it just made me psychotic and didn’t seem to help with concentration or ADD.
