the maze runner Posted September 10, 2019 Share Posted September 10, 2019 It's been now almost 10 ten days on Ritalin. If it were modafinil it would have easily pooped out by now. But don't think the Ritalin is going in that direction. Does it eventually poop out or what happens? Somebody let me know so that I don't later get disappointed. I'm against taking tolerance breaks. Eventually (can't really predict how long), tolerance will most likely develop to your current dose, and when that happens, you will probably need an increase in dosage to get the same effect. Most pdocs will have a limit as to how far they will increase the dose of a stimulant.....Sometimes, they will try switching stimulants if max dose of another stim has been reached. My son has adult ADD, and only takes Adderall on days he works.....He doesn't take it on weekends, vacations, or work holidays. When he was a child, he was on Ritalin, and we avoided the tolerance effect for the most part, by skipping weekends, school holidays, and summer vacations.....In other words, he only took it for school....Now, he just takes Adderall for work.------Just my take on it. For example I was getting 6 hours off a Vyvanse dose and now I get 2 or 3. I get ~ 1.5h off of an Adderall dose now too, which is much shorter than originally. I have been taking stims for over ten years, and, after finding an adequate dose, the only reason I've changed doses was because of other changes to my med cocktail (stop Vyvanse to take MAOI, for example). I have not had much tolerance build-up at all with true stims like Vyvanse or Ritalin (Strattera was different). Additionally - I do not do med holidays. I want to be able to focus in the evenings, on weekends and on holidays - not just when I'm at work. It makes such a difference to my mood to be able to focus. I've never understood not giving these meds every day. I may find the ADHD more disruptive than some people, I suppose. I want to say that I've heard that my experience of limited or no tolerance effect is consistent with an accurate ADHD diagnosis - that the way it effects those with ADHD is much different than other people, and tolerance is not an issue (or is less of an issue). This ties in with what my PDoc told me. He said that Stims do not lose effectiveness for ADD but do lose effectiveness in terms of lifting your mood. He's very experienced in multiple psychiatric disciplines, runs a well-established ADD-focused clinic and is overall excellent so I'm not surprised he's on the money.
