South Dakota Abortion Ban

Recommended Posts

On March 6th, 2006, South Dakota Govenor Mike Rounds signed a bill preventing abortion except in the case where the mother's life is in danger.

Obviously this is law that will go to the Supreme Court, and then we'll get to see our two new justices' real views (as opposed to that crap they spouted at congress.)

Here is a link to some great PBS coverage of the issue.

My favorite part of that link, was Republican state Senator Bill Napoli's response to the following question:

FRED DE SAM LAZARO: Napoli says most abortions are performed for what he calls "convenience." He insists that exceptions can be made for rape or incest under the provision that protects the mother's life. I asked him for a scenario in which an exception may be invoked.

BILL NAPOLI: A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life.

after reading this, and fuming for a bit, i found a campaign to make a word out of Bill Napoli (clickey click) much as Dan Savage created the word santorum  in honor (so to speak) of Senator Rick Santorum.

anyway, always good to find humor in the repulsive, right...

also, please check out this comic that pokes fun at the absurdity of all of this.

This really saddens me. The younger generation wasn't around when roe-v-wade happened. And I feel these young women don't realize the gravity of the situation. It would be horrible (IMHO) to lose this right. The religious right is really getting to me. IF you believe it is a sin to have an abortion, then DON'T GET ONE. But don't use your religious views to take away my rights. I've had it up to here with men being all high and mighty about this also. No offense to men, but really they can't possibly understand, no matter how much it is explained to them.

My first pregnancy nearly killed me! I hemorraged like a gutted pig. I can't take the chance of having another child. Now, my doc says it would probably be ok for me to risk it, but I won't chance my life on it. If I were to get pregnant again, despite my bc efforts, I would have an abortion in a heartbeat. Now, would that fall under the new law of my life being at risk, or since my doc says it's probably gonna be ok, I wouldn't qualify? It's my goddamn life and body. It should be MY choice.

Sorry, this really riles me up. I know it's not exactly on topic, but if this state passes that law, it opens up the possibility for safe abortion to be lost everywhere else.

And what? This guy thinks abortion should only be legal if a woman were a virgin? Or "brutally raped"? Is sodomy necessary to qualify? FUCK HIM!

Where is the law that states any man that is convicted of rape/incest has his whole package surgically removed? That sounds like a much better law to me.

Sorry, I'll quit.

actually, i kinda posted this as an opening for ranting.

the whole abortion (and now in missouri even the right of low income women to get access to birth control) issue has been in the news lateley... and the shit they are saying scares the fucking crap out of me, and i'm sure a lot of other people on this board.

sure, it's not about mental illness... sort of.  unless say, you're me and got pregnant because your doctor neglected to tell you provigil interferes with hormonal birth control... and you're on 900 other meds and in school and so get an abortion... none of which is "life threatening" unless you count threatening my life plans asswads.

it's crap.  total crap.

and ranting is good.  get that anger out.  gah.  fuck em all.

as a member of the "younger generation," I do realize the gravity of the situation.  I mean I *personally* do because I try to keep myself well informed.  I can go on and on about this, but it seems that the three of us are in agreement as it is....

Even a most of us younger generation guys get it.

Whether they get it or not, men shouldn't have a voice in the legality of it.

Period.

Edited to add: I agree with Croix. Except replace 'surgically' with 'using a broken beer bottle or a hammer.'

Let the victim choose which.

Sorry, let me clarify what I meant:

I've noticed the growing trend of younger women who've 1. Always had the right to choose, and therefore lots of them take it for granted and 2. Have grown up in this ever increasing religious right culture and have had it beaten into their heads from early on about how sinful and wrong abortion is.

I wasn't making a generalization about the younger generation (which I am a part of myself).

I have the habit of underexplaining myself and assuming people know exactly what I mean. I apologize if I offended anyone.

Seldarin, great idea! Let's add the amendum (?) that the victim or family member of her choosing should get to do the castrating. In a public forum, of course.

RE: phone numbers in the cartoon

The first one just rings and rings and rings - the second actually is the VM of "Peggy & Bill" and Ms. Peggy has a SERIOUSLY Fargo accent.  And the mailbox was full so I couldn't leave a message.  bwahahahahah!!!

Not getting into my beliefs, because I am not so good with the explaining of those things that go around my head.  Umm, thoughts I think they are?  I blame the meds.  Me stoooopid.  But I am fiercely pro-choice and will set myself on fire in front of the capital if there is every a possibility of Roe v. Wade being overturned...

but it would be rarely used because if men could get pregnant, we would have safe, effective, simple, easily used, little or no sides effects BIRTH CONTROL available OTC in the pharmacies.

condoms don't fill the above requirements.  trust me, as someone who had to rely on them a birth control......

you'd think the wealthiest country in the world could do better.  oh wait, we DID do better: when it came to men's reproductive health, we came up with Viagra *tout sweet* AND got it added to medicare/medicaid/insurance coverage so no men will do without their little blue pills.

meanwhile, thousands of working women must PAY for their BC because insurance won't cover a 'lifestyle drug'.

FUCK!!! i jsut read his description of what would make abortion acceptable under rape:  a young girl virgin saving herself for marriage!!!!  what the fuck about all us MARRIED WOMEN, or DIVORCED WOMEN, or OLDER SINGLE WOMEN?  does this mean because i'm married i have to carry my rapists child to term????  WTF?

this guy deserves to be sodomized.  repeatedly.  against his will.  with his life threatened.

ooooo, i have no words for my anger now......i could chew iron and spit nails.

Should we get the spud gun women together and head to South Dakota?  I'll hold him down while you give him a colonoscopy with the spud gun, reddog.

Sure, it doesn't matter if 42-year-old mother gets raped, or a 33-year-old prostitute, because only virgins matter to this guy.  I guess the rest of us can go ahead and bear the child of this diseased, violent multiple offender---and then give the baby up for adoption.  Just how I want to spend the next nine months.

sigh.  I really thought this ridiculous fight was over in 1970.  Silly me.

I'm infuriated with the Democratic Party for failing to stop the Alito and Roberts appointments.  ;) I don't buy the argment that they were saving the fillibuster for a *really* important reason. What could possibly be more important than this? These two guys now have the power -for life!- to make decisions that will affect us every day of our lives.

this is such a glaring hypocricy that it's just like... GUH.

Missouri has cut funding for birth control for low income women saying state-funded birth control "would have amounted to an endorsement of promiscuous lifestyles."  and yet viagra is somehow okay?

we also, i'd like to add, still don't have a male pill, for, as far as i can tell, no real reason.

i thought this was interesting.  basically, the president of the oglala has declared that he will open a planned parenthood on the reservation (as the reservation is soverign teritory and not subject to state law.)

while the law is comlete crap, it's nice to hear that the ogla nation are making an effort to ensure that women (of all races) will still have access within their state to abortions.

of course, many will have to drive a long distance... but in many states that is (sadly) the case.  i had a friend who got an abortion in texas, and with the 24 hour waiting period, she had to do well over 16 hours of driving to and from the clinic.

i'm thankful to live in a state that voted against a parental notification act, but i know that i can not ignore that the shit going on in south dakota seems destined to spread, and that we have no idea what the court will decide on this matter.  countly my lucky stars is the same as doing nothing.  now, i just have to figure out what i can do, you know? (other than go on a killing spree)

Actually Viagra was sorta an accident.

It was originally a blood pressure medication.

That being said, I'm sure the second a guy popped one the researchers said 'Holy hell, look what it does! Screw sick people, we found a goldmine!'

It's also utter horseshit that a lot of medical plans pay for viagra but not any kind of birth control unless it's 'medically necessary' (Read: Not being used FOR birth control.)

Most guys wouldn't take a male pill because they're stup..err..because it'd make them feel unmacho or some such nonsense.

If I were actually having sex with people :) I'd take it. Hand over fist if it'd work. ;)

I just reread the article and Napoli's description of a good reason for an abortion.

Since he said 'could be so messed up psychologically that having the child could threaten her life' means all you gotta do is say 'If I have a kid I'll kill myself! Argh!' and you can have an abortion?

On the other hand...he sounded like he enjoyed describing all that a leeetle too much.

He creeps me out now.

Edited to correct an error in tense of a word.

Seldarin, I don't know what you've read, but  my insurance company will pay for Viagra for any man who is using it for Erectile Dysfunction.  If you think it isn't being used by hundreds of thousands of men every day, then you're not reading the newspapers.  And it is COVERED by most insurance plans.

I don't know how old you are, but maybe you're not aware that there are 70 million Baby Boomers.  Almost half of them are men.  Those men are between the ages of 46 and 60.....and MANY of them have ED.  I'd be happy to look up the stats on Viagara---I would guess that the number of users is in the millions by now.

And the ladies on this thread are absolutely right when they say that birth control is NOT covered by most health plans.  So working women who have limited resources are forced to pay to prevent pregnancies that they cannot afford.  Either that, or it's the condom routine, and we all know how much men LOVE condoms.

As reddog said, if men could get pregnant, the whole birth control/abortion/ insurance thing would be a different kettle of fish.

Even simpler: Against abortion?  Stop screwing around!

You know, if homosexuality were found to have a strong enough genetic basis to devise a prenatal

test for it, these oh-so-moral bastards would have no problem with abortion. I guess that would

fall under "medically necessary".

Remember folks: it's all to Save The Children!
