StarCrazy
Ive had schizoaffective disorder for over 10 years and my Dad still doesn't really understand what it is. I was thinking of buying him a book on the subject and just wondered if anyone had recommendations?
Gearhead
Hi, Starcrazy. Here’s a topic that came up before that might help, until other people weigh in. I’ve read the one by Elyn Saks, and it’s fascinating. I can’t vouch for any of the others.
confused
I have a link in my sig of a psych central set of articles written by Michael David Crawford who has schizoaffective disorder. It is not a book but maybe he could read it online.
dancesintherain
I picked up both books and they both say schizophrenia...are they inaccurate? It doesn't really matter because i'll read them anyway, but I recommended them to a few people as related to SZA, so I wasn't sure.

If I'm remembering right, she was originally diagnosed with major depression, then with schizoaffective disorder (depressive type), then finally with schizophrenia. She had a lot of negative symptoms, delusions, and disorganized thinking. I'm diagnosed with MDD with psychosis and I found the book relatable and very interesting. saintalto
I recently read the young adult book Challenger Deep and it was a very good portrayal of schizoaffective. The author’s son has schizoaffective. Edited November 21, 2019 by saintalto

dancesintherain
I'm about 3/4 of the way through the Quiet Place. Edited November 28, 2019 by dancesintherain
aura
I've been listening to "The Ghost Garden" on Audible. It's written by a journalist who spent time with a woman with SZ. I absolutely hate how she starts the book by talking about how all these poor people with schizophrenia can't speak, so she needs to do it for them. Um, hello. Totally capable of representing myself.
dancesintherain
I can imagine that would be problematic and belittling. I just finished the quiet room. I read about 3/4 on Wednesday and had brief and intermittent AH as I was waiting for bed. I thought it might have been a coincidence, but it just happened when I finished the last 1/4. I think something about it just hits too close to home. Or is too anxiety-provoking. I'm leaning toward not reading the other one 9the Center Cannot Hold) unless someone suggests that it's significantly different in style. I've swallowed an extra 5mg of zyprexa to shut things up for now.

If you want to get a feel for Elyn Saks' style, she has a TED talk about her experience with schizophrenia. I hope the zyprexa helps. dancesintherain
thanks @Juniper29, I'll give it a whirl then. The hallucinations were unexpected, but they reacted pretty easily to extra zyprexa and sleep.
