Believe it or not, I am a worrier, and I wasn't panicking too much about corona virus until today. Basically, I had to send something off in the post and guess what, to send a letter you have to lick the stamp. Now I'm all anxious because I don't want the receiver to get sick because of me.

I feel like a monster. My mum has a cough and fever and I'm really worried I've transmitted something. I'm not symptomatic and we immediately self isolated, but I can't help stressing that I might kill someone or something extremely dramatic.

Argh. Put in OCD forum because TBH that's where it's coming from. Same thing used to happen to me when I was a cook and had to serve chicken. If it wasn't 100% cooked with good hygiene practise all the way through I would obsess over someone dying. Writing that out is giving me some perspective. One of my biggest obsessions is accidentally killing someone, so there you go.

I'm being an idiot because I started researching, as if that has ever made me feel better. Somebody please talk some sense into me. How is everyone else with (some variant of) contamination OCD doing?

  • 3 weeks later...

One thing I do is not lick the envelope, I use a sponge or wet tissue to wet it. But for the opposite reason.
Also just heard on the radio the next step will be wearing cloth masks for everyone in public. Maybe that would help feeling responsible, it would help me I hope.
Washing, masking and isolating seem like about all we can do. I had to take my mom to the bank and hope that didn’t expose her but so far she’s ok.

You could just use the bank drive-thru lane, if you don't want to go in the lobby....Most banks are now doing drive-thru only, at least around here.

We had to set up putting me as a signer on her account and related business that’s an in person thing. And then we got her online banking, so now personal visits shouldn’t be required. Otherwise banking was drive in only, unfortunately we had extensive business to attend to before she potentially got sick. This is hard on my mom, she enjoyed personal visits to all these places.

I'm sorry you're going through this anxiety. I wouldn't worry about stamps and envelopes - even if you were a carrier, the virus would almost certainly be deactivated by the time the letter arrives. Besides which, it's up to us as individuals to handle opening our mail and washing our hands afterwards.

If you can, remember that even if someone you interact with a lot gets sick, it's the virus making them sick, not you. Plus, you can't know where or when they were exposed.

I hope you start to feel better soon.

There are drive through banks? We only have that for food here.

Thank you, luckily nobody seems to have gotten ill and its been almost 3 weeks, which seems pretty conclusive to me. You are right, the virus makes people ill. In hindsight I do feel pretty stupid about it, I haven't even been into a shop since then (we luckily can get food deliveries, but only once a week)

Drive through food?   That is great.  Where is that?

I don’t know if you consider it drive through, but they have drive up pickup of grocery orders. Although not exactly sure how that works since I haven’t done it. And my mom has a drive through pharmacy. She calls in her refill then there’s a drive up window to pick up.
