Florida starting to reopen some beaches?

Recommended Posts

Honestly, what puzzles me most is that so many people are choosing themselves to go to a crowded beach. Then again, some people unfortunately never did take the dangers of COVID-19 spread seriously. And for some other people who did take it seriously initially a habituation effect has probably already set in: "Hey, it's been a few weeks and I'm still not ill. Looks like this entire thing was overblown. My annoyance about having my life restricted now outweights my concerns about the virus."

Disturbing news, IMO.....3 states in the south are going to start reopening parts of their economies very soon, regardless of Covid-19:

South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia........

South Carolina only recently shut down.  I have two family members there who were begging for a stay at home order for weeks before it was issued.  I’m not surprised they are so quick to reopen.  I’m curious if they’re even following the federal government request of 14 day decline.

My guess is probably not, because here's a quote from the article:

"South Carolina's state epidemiologist, Linda Bell, said that the state may see 750 new cases per week by early May".

I predict a lot of illness and deaths.  Georgia's infection rate has only been up, up, and up on the graph I saw.

As of today at 12pm, the Georgia Dept of Public Health reported that there are 19,881 cases of Covid-19 in the state...Death count so far is 799, and 3779 are hospitalized.....The numbers sure don't look like it's a good time to start reopening things there....**SIGH**

Those are awful.  I recognize it’s a larger state than Maryland, but they’re doing worse than we are (14000 cases, 584 deaths, 3100 hospitalizations). More importantly, we aren’t reopening yet because our governor believes in that strange thing called science.

My Governor believes in science too, thank goodness.....I'm in VA, and we have around 9600 total cases so far, 1581 hospitalizations, and 324 deaths as of today.

VA is not reopening up yet, either......Our stay at home order is still in effect until June 10.

Oregon’s doing pretty well. We put social distancing and isolation measures in place fairy quickly and we’ve only had 78 deaths and a couple thousand confirmed cases. Hospitals aren’t even overwhelmed and apparently we peaked already. My friend who is a nurse at the main hospital treating COVID patients here in my city hasn’t even been called into help on the COVID ward. She’s been doing her regular nursing duties and working normal hours. She says the hospital is pretty quiet these days.

It’s good to hear relative success stories.  My particular area of the state is getting out of state medical professionals (I don’t know what roles).  It’s scary to be in the place that people are flocking to in order to get access to people who need additional health care. I’m thankful that they are doing it.  It’s just scary.

We are on Shelter in Place until May 5th.  Our Gov. Jay Inslee is great.  He is doing a good job.

I don't have the stats but our numbers are dropping.  The assisted living and nursing homes

are still hot spots.  Scary because my mother-in-law lives in one nearby.
